Alternately known as a staircase lift, stairlift, or chair lift, a stairlift is a unique contraption designed to help people cross stairs; the device goes both upwards and downwards and can transport anyone in either direction with ease. They are mechanical devices consisting of an electrical or battery powered chair that rests on a rail and is triggered by the push of a button. This metal rail is attached to the staircase’s steps and enables the seat to move across it.
Stairlifts are for anyone who may have trouble walking up or down the stairs. There’s no shame in a stairlift as stairs are the #1 most dangerous place in any home.
Stairlifts can be used by anyone with a physical disability or disease; this includes examples of conditions like multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, arthritis, or spinal stenosis. These diseases can occur at any age, which is why stairlifts are built to be able to transport a person of any age, weight, or build.
In addition to people with disabilities, older people often have trouble with stairs; age can make our bones weaken and reduce in density, resulting in brittle bones and limbs that cannot carry our body’s weight.
A stairlift should be able to transport an adult from one floor to the other. The typical weight limit offered by most stairlifts is 280 to 350 lb. This is well beyond the weight range of the average adult and we have lifts that can accommodate individuals up to 600lbs as well.
Stairlifts are constructed with a metal track in place; this is generally extruded aluminum or steel. The seat consists of a full back, armrests, and a footrest.
Stairlifts are extremely simple to use; most contraptions only require the push of a button. The button is often located at the side of the seat, or on the armrest. Some models also place their buttons in a box on either side of the railing. It all comes down to the model type you have installed within your home.
The carriage, or seat, is positioned in a “side-saddle” manner, allowing users to sit comfortably and let their legs hang out from the front of the seat and rest on the footrest.
